As a lover of the Las Vegas music scene, I’ve been to my fair share of shows. As a lover of people watching, I love looking at what people are wearing. Last week, I touched on the style of the local rock music scene in Las Vegas, but I want to elaborate more on my general observations of trends I see at shows:
Small shirt, big pants
The divas are loving the small shirt, big pants outfit formula. Whether it’s a tank, crop top, or even just a bra, it’s commonly pairs with jorts or baggy low rise jeans.
Metal accessories
Ah, Hot Topic in 2007. That’s what I see a lot of from guests at local shows. Silver chains, body jewelry, and big belts reminiscent of the 2000s. I’ve seen belts bedazzled with jewels, a classic studded belt, or a simple grommet belts.
Comfy shoes
It’s hard to mosh pit in a kitten heel. Many show goers can be seen wearing timeless shoes, like Converse or Doc Marten. Chunky silhouettes are always a popular option.
Bold makeup with a natural base
This is a style that has been trending with young people recently, but in the rock scene, black lipstick and eye makeup are staples. The base is light or can be nothing at all. Very different than the heavy foundation and cut creases of 2016.
Alterations
I love seeing how people alter their clothes for themselves. The most common thing I see people do is wearing out t-shirts to make them looser at the neck to wear as an off-the-shoulder top. Usually adding rips for an edgy look. Another example is adding shoelaces to make baggy pants fit at the waist.
My biggest take aways from recounting my observations is that general fashion trends can usually be seen in most public spaces, but different subcultures will react or morph these mainstream trends in their own way. Rock music lovers are diverse and can’t be described as a monolith. Trends will change and what people will wear to a show will change too.
